Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about protection insurance and how Protect Select can help you find the right cover.
General Questions
What does Protect Select do?
We're independent protection insurance brokers. That means we work for you, not the insurance companies. Our FCA-regulated advisers review the whole market to find life insurance and protection cover that's tailored to your situation, your family, and your budget.
Is Protect Select regulated?
Yes. Protect Select is a trading name of SGA Consultancy Group Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA number: 801032). This means you can be confident that the advice we provide meets the highest industry standards.
Do I have to pay for your advice?
No — our advice is completely free. We are paid a commission by the insurance provider when a policy is placed, so there's no cost to you for speaking with one of our advisers.
How do I get started?
It's simple. Call us free on 0800 802 1983 or fill in our short quote form. One of our advisers will call you back to discuss your needs and find the right cover for you — no obligation and no pressure.
About Protection Insurance
What is life insurance?
Life insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum to your loved ones if you die during the policy term. It can be used to cover mortgage repayments, replace lost income, pay for childcare, or leave a financial legacy. The amount and length of cover are set when you take out the policy.
What is critical illness cover?
Critical illness cover pays a tax-free lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious illness covered by your policy, such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. Each provider has its own list of covered conditions, and our advisers can help you compare them to find the right policy for you.
What is income protection?
Income protection replaces a portion of your income (typically up to 70%) if you can't work due to illness or injury. Unlike critical illness cover, it pays a regular monthly amount rather than a lump sum, helping you keep up with bills and living costs while you recover.
What is mortgage protection?
Mortgage protection is a type of life insurance where the payout decreases over time in line with your mortgage balance. Because the cover reduces, it's more cost-effective than level term insurance and is designed specifically to pay off your outstanding mortgage if you die during the term.
Do I need life insurance?
If anyone depends on your income — a partner, children, or other family members — life insurance is well worth considering. It ensures your loved ones can maintain their standard of living, stay in the family home, and meet financial commitments if the worst were to happen. If you're unsure what's right for you, our advisers can help.
Getting a Quote
How long does getting a quote take?
An initial call typically takes 15–20 minutes. During that time, your adviser will ask about your circumstances, explain the options available, and provide a recommendation. There's no obligation to proceed, and you're welcome to take time to think things over.
Will I need a medical exam?
Most protection policies don't require a medical exam. You'll usually be asked to complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire as part of the application process. In some cases, a provider may request a GP report, but your adviser will guide you through every step.
Can I change my cover later?
This depends on your policy type and provider. Some policies allow you to increase or adjust cover at key life events (such as getting married or having a child). Our advisers can explain your options when setting up your policy so you know exactly where you stand.
What information will I need to provide?
To get an accurate quote, we'll typically ask for your date of birth, whether you smoke, your general health history, and details about the cover you're looking for (such as the amount and term length). Don't worry if you're not sure — our advisers will walk you through it.
Claims & Support
What happens if I need to make a claim?
If you need to make a claim, contact your insurance provider directly — the details will be in your policy documents. If you need help or guidance at any stage, you're welcome to get in touch with us and we'll do our best to assist you through the process.
Who do I contact for help with an existing policy?
For questions about an existing policy, you can call us free on 0800 802 1983 or send us a message. We're here to help with general queries, though your provider will handle policy-specific changes and claims directly.
